SOMERSET, Pa. (WJAC) — The Somerset County Swiftwater Flood Response Team held demonstrations during the Somerset Night Out earlier this week.
Volunteers show attendees what the team does and how to stay safe while out on the water.
They also demonstrated how they use their equipment.
One of the demonstrations featured K9 Ellie.
Officials say she is able to find drowning victims by using the scent she picks up from the water.
Divers are then able to go to that area and search for the victim.
Dogs like Ellie are able to pick up the scents of victims from up to 80 feet under water.
"This is the time of year where we see fatalities,” says Scott Grahn. “And we want to make sure that we bring closure to that family. First of all, we want to prevent that. That's why we had the children put the PFD's on, and show them how to put it on and take it off. And hopefully mom and dad paid attention."
The response team has about two dozen volunteers and services 13 counties.
